Checking your credit report before taking out a mortgage is CRUCIAL and gives you an insight into what a mortgage lender is going to see when they credit check you.
There are three credit agencies that the lender will look at and these three hold credit reports for you. These are Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. You may have heard of those before and may already be signed up to one of them, however if you want to view all three at the same time, you can use CheckMyFile.
CheckMyFile will allow you to check your history for all three agencies in one report and is free for 30 days then £14.99 a month which can be cancelled at anytime. If you create an account and then scroll to the bottom of the home page you will be able to download a copy of your full report to view.
What should I be checking?
- Look for any missed payments and make your broker aware of these and ensure they are paid up to date
- Contact the lender if you believe there is any unfair defaults on your file as early as possible
- Check the addresses on your report are correct
- Ensure you cancel any unused credit and store cards that are showing on your report
- Check for any County Court Judgments etc and make your broker aware
After checking your report if there is anything you are unsure of you can send your full report to your mortgage broker and they can go through this with you and highlight anything that may cause an issue when it comes to apply for your mortgage. Click here to be diverted to the CheckMyFile website
